Coach John and Brian Kopp
Attorney Brian Kopp was born with a passion for sports. In fact, it’s in his DNA. His father, the legendary John Kopp, coached football at Cardinal Mooney, Wilson, Chaney and Fitch. To this day “Coach” Kopp’s former players as well as the coaches he mentored say he made them winners on the field and in life.
That is why it’s no surprise that Brian, a standout quarterback at Boardman, Ohio High School and Bethany College, gravitated toward sports law after establishing himself as one of the region’s most effective litigators.
He first entered the field as a certified NFL agent/contractor advisor in 2007 as a member of the Debartolo Sports and Entertainment, Inc. team. “I always had an eye on staying in sports,” Attorney Kopp said, “Eddie DeBartolo Jr. gave me the chance to do it. I was involved in the recruitment process and supported the field agents from the contract side of the business.”
In 2010, a few months before the NFL locked out its players for six months, Attorney Kopp gave up his certification to be an agent to concentrate on representing coaches. His success speaks for itself: he has negotiated multi-million dollar contracts for clients who coach at major universities across the United States.
He says his Youngstown roots are one key to his success. “I do business with a lot of people in the sports world who have very strong ties to the Mahoning Valley. They either started here themselves or have a local connection,” he said. In either case, it helps build trust and that’s a key component to success in this extremely competitive area of the law.”

A lawsuit filed by Attorney Brian Kopp, managing partner of BKM’s Complex Litigation and Sports Law Practice Groups, dominated the news in the sports world yesterday.
As reported by ESPN, the Washington Post, and numerous other media outlets, in the suit filed against Bank of America (BoA) on behalf of Robert Rothman, a former minority partner in the Washington Commanders NFL franchise, Attorney Kopp alleges that BoA, along with former Commanders owner Daniel Snyder and NFL officials, who are not named as defendants in the lawsuit, “conspired” to force Rothman and his two fellow minority partners to sell their 40% stake to Snyder for $875 million in April 2021.
By allegedly ignoring “Snyder’s improper and illegal dealings,” Bank of America executives “knew or reasonably anticipated that Snyder would have to sell the Franchise as a result of Snyder’s indebtedness,” Attorney Kopp wrote in the 45-page complaint filed Wednesday in Tampa federal court.
“For profit and prestige, BoA blind-eyed legal, ethical and moral obligations,” Atty. Kopp told ESPN Wednesday. “As a client of the BofA’s financial service division, Bob was entitled to honest financial advice free of conflict and bad motive.”
